Yoga or Yogi is from the Sanskrit word "Yug," which means, to join." The English word, "Yoke," comes from the same source and carries a similar meaning. An Eastern practice, over 5000 years old, links the breath, mind and posture together for continued vitality, freedom from disease and fear, mental power and happiness, self-control, clear-sightedness, and spiritual growth. Yoga is a means for the patient/client to make a mind-body connection and work on a deeper level, while learning principles of the eight fold path that lead to self-discovery. Hatha yoga is offered in our program, which offers the body a gentle way to breathe and move energy along with promoting healing and deep relaxation. Postures are restorative, restful, meditative and calming to the body. Mindfulness is the practice whereby a person is intentionally aware of his or her thoughts and actions, while remaining in the present moment, and free of judgement. Mindfulness is applied to both physical actions and the mind's own thoughts and feelings, and promotes transformation and healing with one’s own inner resources. Art Experiential sessions may include a technique called Mandala's drawings, which are based on a Tibetan meditation technique. Participants will work in a group setting on their own Mandala using oil pastels, colored chalks and other materials. Music Therapy sessions may include drumming, music improvisation, guided imagery and music, mind/body music focused relaxation, or music and visualization. Dance and Movement Therapy dance and movement therapy is the use of choreographed or improvised movement as a way of treating social, emotional, cognitive, and physical problems. Dance therapy harnesses this power of movement in a therapeutic setting and uses it to promote personal growth, health, and well-being. Psychodrama sessions may include a technique called "empty chair" where participants will have an opportunity to role-play statements, questions or dialog with an inner issue or a significant person in their lives. ShamanasanaSM combines the ancient traditions of yoga and shamanism to create a healing synergy between self-awareness and spiritual guidance. Created by Nancy McCaochan, ShamanasanaSM encourages us to be aware of the bhava, or feeling state of each asana (yoga pose) as we breathe our way from one to another. Working also with the chakras, ShamanasanaSM awakens us to our spiritual heart, our astral body, and the earth energies that surround us. |
