Our advisory board consists of medical, mental health, yoga, clergy, business and professional leaders in the local community along with those who have a national presence and have influenced the philosophy of our program.
Medical
ARTHUR EFROS, MD INTERNIST is board certified in internal medicine and has an interest in geriatrics. Art's medical degree is from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit. His current practice is with Northwest Internal Medicine, a division of Millennium Medical Group- St. John/Providence Health System. . His special interest in eating disorders lends itself to our programs at Inner Door Center as we utilize Dr. Efros's expertise in the management of our clients.
CORNELL COLBERT, JR., DDS, RTY, CYT-C has been a General Dentist for over thirty years. Cornell graduated from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. Further exploration of body, emotional well-being and spiritual growth led him to the further appreciation of philosophy and practice of yoga. The following 18 years was a journey of establishing a personal practice. Along the way, he met and studied with many gifted teachers in many different styles of yoga. While the styles had different points of emphasis, they all held the development of breathing techniques (Pranayama) in the core practice. Dr. Colbert still practices dentistry and also teaches Hatha yoga classes at the Center for Yoga in West Bloomfield and Birmingham, Michigan. He also owns and operates Michigan Yoga Therapy.
DAVID BENKOFF, MD GASTROENTEROLOGIST is board certified in gastroenterology. David's medical degree is from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit. His current practice is with Millennium Medical Group in Southfield, Michigan. His expertise in the involvement of gastrointestinal disease in our eating disorder population makes him a great resource for our facility.
JEFFREY HOOMAIAN, SOLARA MEDICAL SUPPLIES, DIABETES
Jeff's passion is helping people and improving their ability to be
happy. As a representative for Solara Medical
Supplies, Jeff has spent the last ten years speaking to over 1000
groups on the benefits of blood sugar monitoring, insurance guidelines
and hurdles, industry advancements, and how testing should be free (or
close to it) for 99% of Americans with diabetes. While Jeff loves to
motivate physicians and other healthcare providers to focus more on
diabetes, his favorite audience are those people living with diabetes
themselves. He says, "It's only there when you can really make a
difference and help them learn just a few simple steps to better self-
management of this growing epidemic. While we wait for a cure, isn't
taking care of this disease our first priority? We have to remember
it's not the diabetes that kills, it's the complications - and those
CAN be avoided or delayed with proper self-management."
JOEL TOPF, MD NEPHROLOGIST is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and its subspecialty board of Nephrology. Joel's medical degree is from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit. He completed a double residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine. Following a year working in Pediatric Critical Care, he completed his Nephrology Fellowship at the University of Chicago. He is the author of two medical textbooks: The Microbiology Companion and The Fluid, Electrolyte and Acid-Base Companion along with numerous abstracts and peer reviewed articles of research. Joel is also the chief editor of Kidometer, a pediatric application for the Palm OS. He blogs at the Precious Bodily Fluids website and has interest in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), HIV/AIDS effect on the kidneys, Fluid and electrolyte diseases
and Antiphospholipid syndrome.
NATHAN KERNER, MD is a board certified cardiologist and diplomate in adult transthoracic and stress echocardiography. He has a private practice in Southfield, MI and is also on staff at William Beaumont and Providence Hospitals along with the Detroit Medical Center. Dr. Kerner is the co-director of echocardiography laboratory at William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, MI. He has also been involved in the teaching of medical students and has conducted and published peer reviewed research in various areas of cardiology.
Nutrition
EVELYN TRIBOLE, MS, RD is an award-winning registered dietitian, with a nutrition counseling practice in Newport Beach, California. She has written seven books including the bestsellers Healthy Homestyle Cooking and Intuitive Eating(co-author). Her newest book is the Ultimate Omega-3 Diet. Evelyn was the nutrition expert for Good Morning America, appearing from 1994-’95 and was a national spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association for 6 years. She was contributing editor for Shape magazine where her monthly column, Recipe Makeovers, appeared for 11 years. She is often sought by the media for her nutritional expertise and has appeared on hundreds of interviews, including: CNN, Today Show, MSNBC, Fox News, USA Today, Wall St. Journal and People magazine.
GRETCHEN ROSE NEWMARK, MA, RD, LD
is an expert in weight management and disordered eating, and is a Registered Dietitian in private practice in Portland, Oregon. While Chief Nutritionist of the Multiple Risk Factor Intervention Trial at the University of Southern California School of Medicine, having recovered from anorexia nervosa and bulimia on her own, in 1979 she founded and led the first group for people with eating disorders in Los Angeles. Bringing experience from her meditation and yoga practices together with principles of Gestalt and cognitive behavioral therapies, she adopted mindful eating first for herself and eventually in her private practice. Newmark is a writer in the field of nutrition and health with articles appearing in a variety of magazines, including the Yoga Journal, The Sun, Healthy Weight Journal, Buddhism Today and Let’s Live. She is a popular public speaker, lecturing widely for professionals and the public. She taught hatha yoga in Santa Monica and Portland, and currently teaches meditation. She co-founded the Portland Diamondway Buddhist Center in 1997, and teaches
Buddhism in centers internationally.
LESLIE GOLDMAN, MPH is an award-winning Chicago-based health and medical writer, specializing in women's issues. A regular contributor to Health Magazine, Women's Health, Parenting, Runner's World, and more, she earned her Masters degree in Public Health at the University of Illinois-Chicago and Bachelors of Science at University of Wisconsin-Madison, which recently named her to its inaugural "Forward Under 40" list, which highlights the top 20 UW grads under the age of 40 making an impact in the state, nation and beyond. Goldman's first book, Locker Room Diaries: The Naked Truth About Women, Body Image, and Re-Imagining the "Perfect" Body (Da Capo, 2007), has been featured on the Today Show, in People Magazine and numerous other prominent publications. She recently finished a 16-city nationwide college tour, where she reached thousands of women through her thought-provoking and inspiring presentation Body Image: The Naked Truth. Yoga
MATTHEW J. TAYLOR, PT, PhD, RYT was elected president of the board of directors for IAYT in February 2008. Matt is the founder of Dynamic Systems Rehabilitation in Scottsdale, AZ. The clinic is a fusion of classical Yoga therapeutic principles and his doctoral work in modern transformation learning theory. He is a U.S. Army/Baylor University physical therapy graduate with eight years of active duty acute orthopedic care experience. He then returned to the Midwest where he established a private practice with an integrated health club that grew from a staff of two to seventeen over 15 years in a town of 3500 people. His doctoral work investigated a Yoga-based back school. He has been a board member since February 2007 and is also the representative for IAYT on the board of the Academic Consortium for Complementary and Alternative Health Care. In addition to a busy clinical practice he leads continuing education workshops for healthcare and yoga professionals. Widely published on integrative rehabilitation from a clinical perspective, his practice has also been featured numerous times for its integrative organizational model.
Community
JUDY RUBIN, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, TRI-COMMUNITY COALITION BERKLEY, HUNTINGTON WOODS, OAK PARK, MICHIGAN is the executive director of the Tri-Community Coalition (TCC) and has been for the past nine years. Before coming to the TCC, Judy worked as a Judaic Consultant for JARC –the Jewish Association for Residential Care and prior to that position was a special education teacher in the area of learning disabilities in the City of Oak Park. In her current role as executive director, Judy oversees the workings of this substance abuse prevention non profit for the cities of Berkley, Huntington Woods and Oak Park. Ms. Rubin works closely with all sectors of the community to respond to the threats of illegal drug use and excessive alcohol and tobacco use especially among the youth of the community.
LORI VIOLANTE-LONDON BUSINESS OWNER, WRITE IMPRESSIONS, ROYAL OAK, MI is a business owner with a presence in downtown Royal Oak for over 15 years. Write Impressions has been voted the best of Detroit by WDIV-TV. Lori and her family have been committed to doing business in Royal Oak since 1954. Lori is an active member of the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce and sits on the board of Holiday Market in Royal Oak, MI.
STUDENTS AGAINST DESTRUCTIVE DECISIONS, BERKLEY HIGH SCHOOL, BERKLEY, MI SADD is a peer-to-peer education, prevention, and activism organization dedicated to preventing destructive decisions, particularly underage drinking, other drug use, risky and impaired driving, teen violence, and teen suicide.
Clergy
PASTOR LORANELL(LOR) BREYLEY, CANA LUTHERAN CHURCH, BERKLEY, MI was ordained in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in 1998 and is currently serving at Cana Evangelical Lutheran church in Berkley MI. Previous to entering the ministry Pastor Lor worked as Mechanical Engineer in research, and previous to that as a Medical Laboratory Assistant. She has finally come around to her calling in the ministry. The theology of the Lutheran church holds that humankind is an interrelationship between the body and the spirit (soul). The physical and spiritual together make up the person and together experience salvation now and in the future. This ministry at reconnect also seeks the healing and integration of body and spirit.
RABBI CHANOCH HADAR, WOODWARD SHUL, ROYAL OAK, MI
was born in Israel and raised in Johannesburg South Africa, and received his Rabbinical Ordination from the Chief Rabbi of Israel at the Rabbinical College of America in Morristown, New Jersey. Rabbi Hadar has served in Jewish Communities in Miami, Russia, and New York. Together with his wife Tamar he currently serves as The Woodward Avenue Shul’s director.
RABBI YISRAEL PINSON is the Director of the Daniel B. Sobel Friendship House in West Bloomfield, MI. Since joining the Friendship House he has helped create a local Jewish Recovery Community where recovering addicts are helped through support, guidance, friendship and community. Rabbi Yisrael facilitates Jewish Recovery meetings, where recovering addicts from all 12-step programs meet and share regularly. He also teaches classes on Judaism & Recovery
Business
ANDREW JORDAN, CPA, MSF is a Certified Public Accountant with a degree in Accounting from Wayne State University in Detroit and a Masters Degree in Finance from Walsh College of Business Administration. Andrew started his business career in public accounting and later transferred to industry where he worked as a Controller for a variety of mid-size businesses.
